Abstract：Top management teams can play a key role in organizational innovation. Adopting this top management perspective we study how CEO empowering leadership is related to organizational innovation. We identify top management team (TMT) productive energy as a key mediating variable, and competitive intensity in the context in which the organization is embedded as moderating influence – empowering leadership is more strongly positively related to TMT productive energy and firm innovation with higher competitive intensity. This mediated moderation model was supported for organizational innovation in a survey of 144 Chinese firms. We discuss how these findings speak to the promise of the empowering leadership perspective on organizational innovation.
